Why Remuera tractors won’t outbid truckers

As New Zealand faces the serious and concerning prospect of diesel supply disruptions, some commentators have expressed worry that wealthy owners of large diesel SUVs (so-called “Remuera tractors”) will outbid other diesel consumers who carry essential cargo such as food, goods for export, or who use diesel in agriculture and industry.

While the concern is understandable, the risks of centralised fuel allocation are substantial. Any person or agency charged with rationing diesel has far more limited information than the fuel suppliers, freight operators, farmers, and thousands of other consumers whose individual decisions collectively determine prices.

This note tests the “Remuera tractor” thesis against fleet data, consumption statistics, and demand elasticity evidence.
